Spark plugs ignite the fuel and air mixture in a petrol engine; ignition coils and leads deliver the high voltage they need. Diesel engines use glow plugs to help them start, especially on cold Kalahari winter mornings. Worn plugs or a failing coil waste fuel, cause misfires and can damage the catalytic converter over time.
Signs of ignition problems
- Engine misfires, stutters or runs rough
- Hard starting, or a diesel struggles to start when cold
- Higher fuel consumption
- Poor acceleration or loss of power
- Check engine light flashing
- White smoke from a diesel on cold start
